Producer Compensation in Public Exchanges

Posted on May 13th, 2013

The Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) published guidance on May 1, 2013 about the role of insurance producers in the Health Insurance Marketplaces, also referred to as the public exchanges.

The guidance suggests that insurance producers will play a valuable role in facilitating public exchange enrollments starting this October.

Insurance producers will be able to assist in enrollments through carrier portals or a “Marketplace” pathway. Both processes will transmit identifying information about the insurance producer to ensure compensation for enrollments.

Federally-facilitated and state partnership exchanges will require a registration process for producers and will be available this summer. The registration process will provide a unique ID to producers for use on applications.

The recent guidance includes general information about the role of insurance producers in the public exchanges and answers to frequently asked questions.
